## Primary Source Analysis #1: **Ramsey Abbey—Cyber/Discipline Angle**
### Video Format
- **Length:** 4–5 minutes
- **Submission:** YouTube Unlisted Link
***
### Part 1: **Location and Visual Analysis** (80%)
1. **Choose Visitation**
- Use Thompson’s printed editions (PDFs you uploaded) to find the *Ramsey Abbey* visitation. Bookmark/note the English translation and any folio/page clues.
2. **Detective Work—Find in Manuscript**
- Open the digitized manuscript PDF(s).
- Use clues: names (Ramsey), headings, folio numbers. Try to visually match the printed record to the handwritten manuscript.
- Take **screenshots** of your search—successes, failed attempts, findings.
- Highlight any clearly matched lines or Latin words.
- Notice visual stuff: big initials, rubrics (red writing), margins, repairs, notes.
3. **Show Your Process**
- In your video, explain how you searched, what clues you followed, and what you found (or couldn’t find—failed searches are still part of the detective story).
- Emphasize the challenge and what you learned decoding/manipulating the source.
***
### Part 2: **Interpretation and Context** (20%)
1. **Theme/Angle:**
- Focus on how Ramsey Abbey handled **discipline, enforcement, and security** within the monastic community.
- Explain:
- How did rules get enforced (“role-based access control,” audits, attendance tracking)?
- What problems or threats did they face (internal/external)?
- How does this resemble modern cybersecurity or organizational discipline?
- Use direct examples and quotes from the translated visitation record.
2. **Connect to Class/Context**
- Relate what you’ve observed to the bigger picture of discipline, reform, or vulnerability in medieval monastic life.
- Briefly reflect: What surprised you, what was tough to analyze, what does this reveal about authority or “security” in the past?
***
### Bonus Challenge (+5%)
- Find Ramsey Abbey’s site on a **modern map or Street View** (now in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire).
- Show what survives (Abbey Gatehouse, parish church).
- Include a screenshot or short video in your presentation’s conclusion or credits.
***
### Video/Slide Requirements
- Appear on camera at least once (intro, outro, or a quick clip).
- Use as little text as possible (max ~20 words per slide).
- Show evidence: screenshots, manuscript images, maps.
- End with a brief bibliography/credit slide (cite PDFs, map, any images/music).
***
### Tips from the Assignment
- Don’t use AI or scripts; speak naturally in your own words.
- Sound like you—pauses and human stumbles are normal!
- Slides are for evidence and images—not for blocks of text.
- Focus most of your time on your detective process.
- Reflect briefly: Why does this matter? What does it say about discipline/security versus today?
